Determined as a priority by the Saint-Laurent population at the Montréal Summit held in 2002, the construction of a new library is a real necessity and has already been at the heart of the concerns of Saint-Laurent administration for twenty years.

Subsidized under the terms of the Entente sur le développement culturel de Montréal signed in November 2007 by the ministère de la Culture, des Communications et de la Condition féminine and Ville de Montréal in the wake of Rendez-vous Montréal, métropole culturelle, the Saint-Laurent project was selected by the Ville and the Ministère based on specific criteria, namely the variance in comparison with the standards published in the Assessment of the Municipal Librairies on the Island of Montréal, the willingness of the Borough to become financially involved, and the project’s feasibility and quality.

The new building will be aptly located in a central area of the Borough, on boulevard Thimens, at the centre of the recreo-educational axis formed by the arena, the école secondaire Saint-Laurent, the Centre de formation professionnelle Léonard-De-Vinci, the Centre des loisirs, the bicycle path, and parc Marcel-Laurin.
